There is a particular kind of weekend that the Yorkshire Coast does best. One that starts with strong coffee in a quiet kitchen, takes in a walk across a clifftop, and ends, somehow, with the windows open and the distant sound of the sea.
This is a small guide to slowing down — two days, three places to stay, and all the in-between moments that matter most.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Exhale
The road into Scarborough begins to open out as you leave the busier towns behind. Buildings give way to fields, the horizon feels wider, and the pace of everything starts to change.
At Stepney Hill Farm, you are close enough to the Yorkshire Coast to spend your days beside the sea, yet far enough away to return to somewhere quieter when the day is done.
Choose the stay that suits your weekend.
The Shepherd's Hut is made for two. Hidden away with its own private garden, hot tub and outdoor kitchen, it is the kind of place where plans quickly become unnecessary. Light the fire, pour a drink and let the first evening pass slowly.
The Spinney offers more room to settle in. Its warm, relaxed interiors make it a comfortable base for evenings in the wood burning hot tub and unhurried days exploring the coast.
Then there is Kaitkyella, another peaceful place to retreat to after a day outside. Each stay has its own character, but all three share the same feeling: privacy, countryside and a chance to properly switch off.
Unpack only what you need. Open the doors. Put the kettle on.
The weekend has started.
Saturday Morning: Coffee, Coast and Open Air
There is no need to set an alarm.
Wake slowly, make something warm to drink and sit outside for a while. On the farm, mornings are accompanied by birdsong, distant animals and the gentle sounds of the countryside waking up around you.
When you are ready, head towards the coast.
Scarborough has two very different bays, each with its own character. The South Bay is lively and nostalgic, with its harbour, traditional amusements and sweeping view towards the castle. The North Bay feels quieter and more open, with colourful beach huts and long stretches of sand.
For a slower morning, take a walk along the shoreline or climb towards Scarborough Castle, where the land rises above both bays. From here, the view stretches across the town, the sea and the coastline beyond.
There is no particular destination required. The joy is in wandering.
Stop for coffee. Find a bench overlooking the water. Watch the fishing boats move in and out of the harbour.
Some weekends are better without a checklist.
Saturday Afternoon: Follow the Coast
After lunch, continue north towards Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay or Whitby.
The drive itself is part of the day, winding through villages, moorland and stretches of countryside that suddenly reveal the sea.
Robin Hood's Bay is best explored on foot. Its narrow streets tumble steeply towards the beach, passing stone cottages, small shops and hidden passageways along the way. At low tide, the shoreline opens up beneath the cliffs and makes a wonderful place for a long walk.
Further north, Whitby offers a little more bustle. Climb the steps towards the abbey, explore the old town or pick up fish and chips to eat while looking across the harbour.
Alternatively, turn south towards Filey for a gentler afternoon. Walk along the promenade, continue towards Filey Brigg or simply find a quiet section of beach and stay there for a while.
There is no wrong direction on this stretch of coast.
Saturday Evening: Return to the Farm
The best part of a day beside the sea is returning somewhere warm afterwards.
Back at Stepney, the evening belongs to you.
At the Shepherd's Hut, prepare dinner in the outdoor kitchen, light the fire pit and step into the hot tub as the temperature begins to drop. Settle beneath the stars or watch a film on the projector with the doors closed and the outside world forgotten.
At The Spinney, open a bottle of wine and sit under the trees with the fire burning. Cook something slowly, talk for longer than usual and enjoy an evening without anywhere else to be.
The farm feels different after dark. The valley becomes still, the skies feel bigger and the lights of the coast sit somewhere beyond the fields.
Leave the windows open for a little while.
Listen.
Sunday Morning: Take Your Time
Sunday mornings should be unhurried.
Make breakfast at your stay or head into Scarborough in search of good coffee and something freshly baked. Afterwards, choose one final walk before heading home.
The Cleveland Way offers some of the most memorable stretches of coastline in Yorkshire. You do not need to walk far to experience it. Even a short section rewards you with open views, sea air and the feeling of being properly away from everyday life.
Closer to the farm, country lanes and rural footpaths provide a quieter alternative. Take your coffee with you, pull on a warm layer and head out without much of a plan.
The point is not how far you go.
It is how different you feel when you return.
Before You Leave
Weekends on the Yorkshire Coast rarely need to be complicated.
A comfortable place to stay. Something good to eat. A long walk beside the sea. An evening spent outdoors, even when the air turns cold.
The Stepney Collection was created for these kinds of stays — thoughtful spaces rooted in the landscape, offering a quiet base from which to experience Scarborough and the wider Yorkshire Coast.
Come for two days.
Stay for the slow mornings, the open skies and the moments between the plans.
Chances are, you will begin thinking about your next visit before you have even reached home.
